3D-cat is member of ACT’s 3D-CAPS consortium
Being part of ACT’s 3D-CAPS consortium, 3D-cat has received a subsidy in 2017.
ACT is a European initiative to establish CO2 capture and storage (CCS) as a tool to combat global warming. ACT means Accelerating CCS Technologies, and the ambition of the ten partners is to fund research and innovation projects that can lead to safe and cost effective technology.
Step-changes are required to accelerate the introduction of CCS technologies, one of the overall goals of the ERA-NET ACT program. The project 3D-CAPS targets a productivity increase of an order of magnitude in two sorbent-based technologies for CCS. This will lead to a substantial decrease in overall equipment size and costs. This will be achieved using the latest available techniques for materials production: additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D-printing. One bottle neck for traditional packed-bed solutions for sorbent-based CCS technologies is the trade-off between flow-rate through the reactor, pressure drop and kinetics of the adsorption process. The use of 3D-printing will allow bespoke material configuration solutions for sorbent-based CCS technologies not available with current production technologies that allow the maximum interplay between these three competing and complementary elements.

The NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES, previously Technology Foundation STW) connects people and resources to develop technology with added economic value that contributes to solving societal issues. This is realised through the funding of excellent applied and engineering sciences research, by bringing users and researchers together, and by supervising projects towards optimal opportunities for knowledge transfer.
The NWO Domain AES is operational within Applied and Engineering Sciences. NWO (The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) is the national research council.

In 2017, 3D-cat received a regional (Noord Holland) innovation (MIT) subsidy for a project by a Small or Medium Enterprise (SME) which had a positive impact on innovation, revenue and employment in the region.
3D-cat is a spin out venture from Dutch technology institute ECN (part of TNO)
3D-cat intends to produce and market Chemical Processing Units (CPU’s), tailor-made and optimized catalyst and sorbent reactor elements and mini‐reactors to replace current systems, such as those with loose catalytic materials, resulting in smaller plants at much lower cost.
In the conversion industries, there is an increased focus on catalysis and sorption, to make the petrochemical industry more efficient and sustainable through i) faster and better reaction conversions at more modest conditions, ii) smaller plant footprint and investment, iii) integration of chemical conversion and heating/cooling functions, and iv) better off-gas treatment of power plants.
The advantages of using 3D ceramic additive manufacturing technology in the fields of catalysis and sorption are optimal spatial design of catalyst or sorbent (for better operational hydraulics), optimal coverage of active components (e.g. metal thickness and spatial distribution), optionality of built‐in heating/cooling channels, and a very low waste production process of the reactor elements themselves. As a consequence of these, conversion reactors will be (much) smaller, which in turn will lead to much lower plant investment. In addition, the optimal design will lead to better conversion rates, which will result in higher efficiency and less waste. Finally, heating and cooling is expected to be more direct, thereby resulting in lower energy consumption per conversion amount.
This technology application not only has the potential to significantly reduce conversion cost per ton or m3, but as a consequence also to enable companies to (re‐) invest again in the European conversion industry.
